Self-Righteousness
I think that too often… as christians, we repent for something, but we don’t regret it. This is what’s causing us to live as hypocrites, as self-righteous people. We think that all we have to do is say “sorry”, and that’ll give us a one-way ticket to heaven.
Simply asking for forgiveness when our heart isn’t in the right place is pretty much the same thing as not asking for forgiveness at all. If you think about it, how many times have we “repented” for going out to get wasted, hook up with someone, or cheat on a test…etc. but want to do it again? or DO do it again? it’s cause we don’t regret it. that means we truly didn’t repent, and therefore, our transgressions weren’t forgiven.
the definition of repent says: to feel sorry, self reproachful, or contrite for past conduct; regret or be conscience-stricken about a past action, attitude, etc.
If we really regretted something, we wouldn’t want to do it again. As regret is a part of repentance, it seems like the reason a lot of us live as empty christians is because we truly don’t ask for forgiveness. Then how can we expect God to forgive us? Maybe that’s why we continue to struggle with hardships.
If God was truly #1 in your life… you wouldn’t fall for temptations. It’s like when we say that no matter what, grades are first, and we will be willing to drop ANYTHING to maintain our grades. How sad is it that for most of us, God isn’t even on the level of grades? or organizations, or a gf/bf, or anything else…
If we really love God with all our heart I don’t think we’d fall for any of that cause we know what’s priority. But it’s cause we’re so in love with all our temptations that we continue to fall.
It’s not that God expects us to be perfect. Even though by knowing God and acknowledging Jesus as our savior, we are already saved… that doesn’t mean it’s okay to just do whatever you want cause you know Jesus already saved you. “Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.” - Romans 3:31
It’s cause we love Jesus so much that we want to make him happy as much as we can. But at times when temptations get the best of us, it’s important to truly repent… or else we’re just hypocrites that are no better than people who don’t know God at all.
